McGRATTAN TO PHOENIX

The Phoenix Coyotes acquired winger Brian McGrattan from the Ottawa Senators for a fifth-round draft pick in 2009.

What does it give the Phoenix Coyotes
The Coyotes played last season without a true enforcer, after dealing Georges Laraque to Pittsburgh in 2006-07. Enter McGrattan, who will be an important deterrent on what is expected to be an extremely youthful roster in Phoenix this season. He won't play every game, and won't produce many points, but may wind up leading the league in bouts.

What does it give the Ottawa Senators
The Senators stopped using McGrattan at roughly the midway mark of the last two seasons, so clearly he wasn't in their long-range plans going forward. Therefore, they were able to secure a mid-round draft pick from the 'Yotes. Ottawa will probably go with more of a team-tough approach in 2008-09, though Chris Neil is still around and capable of policing things.
