ZHITNIK TO THE ATL

The Atlanta Thrashers acquired defenseman Alexei Zhitnik from the Philadelphia Flyers for defenseman Braydon Coburn.

What does it give the Atlanta Thrashers
In Zhitnik, the Thrashers have acquired some badly needed mobility for their blueline. Unfortunately, Zhitnik has struggled big-time in 2006-07, both with the Flyers and New York Islanders earlier in the season. Perhaps he'll fit in nicely with the Thrashers, who will probably use Zhitnik extensively on special teams. This deal smells of desperation for Atlanta GM Don Waddell, who cannot afford another failed regular season. The Thrashers were in free-fall recently, so Waddell paid a hefty price in an attempt to correct that.

What does it give the Philadelphia Flyers
This move will turn out to be terrific asset management by Flyers' interim GM Paul Holmgren, who dealt Freddy Meyer to originally acquire Zhitnik. Now, he lands Coburn, a significant upgrade over Meyer--at least in terms of long-range upside. Coburn, along with fellow recent acquisition Ryan Parent, represent the future along the Philly blueline. Look for Coburn to secure a spot in the lineup right away. This is an excellent move by the Flyers.
