VANDERMEER, EAGER SWAP TEAMS

The Chicago Blackhawks acquired winger Ben Eager from the Philadelphia Flyers for defenseman Jim Vandermeer.

What does it give the Chicago Blackhawks
A high-energy player for the fourth line, capable of chipping in with some offense from time to time. Eager led the entire league in penalty minutes last season with 233 and currently sits 15th with 62 PIM. He has yet to record a point this season. His presence will impact how often David Koci gets into the lineup going forward. The Blackhawks would have lost Vandermeer as an unrestricted free agent in the off-season.

What does it give the Philadelphia Flyers
The acquisition of Vandermeer gives the team another defenseman. Since Vandermeer is not yet signed for next season, it gives the team wiggle room to perhaps move a rearguard who is signed for next year. That would free up some cap space and help them re-sign the likes of Jeff Carter, R.J. Umberger and Jason Smith.
