VANDERMEER TO CALGARY

The Calgary Flames acquired defenseman Jim Vandermeer from the Philadelphia Flyers for a third-round draft pick in 2009.

What does it give the Calgary Flames
The Flames are adding a little more defensive depth with the acquisition of Vandermeer. He plays the aggressive style that GM Darryl Sutter and coach Mike Keenan love, but he'll have to improve on his performance as a Flyer--which was forgettable. If everybody is healthy, Vandermeer may be relegated to the role of seventh defenseman in Calgary.

What does it give the Philadelphia Flyers
The Flyers added veteran blueliner Jaroslav Modry earlier, so someone was going to be the odd man out. Therefore, it made a lot of sense to trade Vandermeer at this time. It wasn't a hard decision, since Vandermeer struggled badly during his brief second stint with the Flyers. Therefore, Philly will gladly accept a third rounder in what is expected to be a very deep '09 draft.
