TARNSTROM TO EDMONTON

The Edmonton Oilers acquired defenseman Dick Tarnstrom from the Pittsburgh Penguins for winger Jani Rita and defenseman Cory Cross.

What does it give the Edmonton Oilers
In Tarnstrom, the Oilers add another puck-moving defenseman to go along with Chris Pronger and Marc-Andre Bergeron. He'll see some time on the power play, and try to revert back to 2003-04 form. An unrestricted free agent at the end of the season, Tarnstrom is a short-term fix for an Edmonton team desperately trying to reach the postseason.

What does it give the Pittsburgh Penguins
Rita is the key player in the deal from a Penguins perspective. A good skater, Rita should be able to crack the Pens lineup immediately and fill a role on the second or third line. Cross replaces Tarnstrom on the roster. Both players were frequent healthy scratches in their previous roles, which may not change for Cross in Steeltown.
