CANES LAND RECCHI
The Carolina Hurricanes acquired forward Mark Recchi from the Pittsburgh Penguins for defenseman Niklas Nordgren, forward Krys Kolanos and a second-round draft pick in 2007.
What does it give the Carolina Hurricanes
The Hurricanes needed a natural right wing to replace injured star Erik Cole, and Recchi fits the mold perfectly. He's also versatile enough to play any other forward position should the need arise. He has playoff experience, which is what the OECanes are looking for right now. Recchi may pay immediate dividends, but he's not expected back in 2006-07. In fact, he may head back to Pittsburgh in the off-season.
What does it give the Pittsburgh Penguins
Nordgren and Kolanos will likely be given ice time down the stretch, as the Penguins look for players who may be able to help them in 2006-07. Nordgren is a solid two-way player with questionable finishing skills, while Kolanos can score but has holes in the rest of his game. The key asset for the Pens is the second rounder, since the organization is clearly rebuilding.
