The New York Rangers acquired goaltender Chad Johnson from the Pittsburgh Penguins for a fifth-round draft pick in 2009.
What does it give the New York Rangers
The Rangers felt the need to add a goalie prospect to their ranks, so they went for Johnson in a deal with Pittsburgh--instead of the conventional draft route. They obviously liked something in Johnson to pull the trigger on a deal.
What does it give the Pittsburgh Penguins
The Penguins were having problems getting Johnson under contract, so moving him at the draft for a fifth-round draft pick makes a lot of sense. They used the pick to select undersized center Andy Bathgate from the OHL.
