KINGS ADD SMYTH

The Los Angeles Kings acquired winger Ryan Smyth from the Colorado Avalanche for defensemen Kyle Quincey and Tom Preissing, plus a fifth-round draft pick in 2010.

What does it give the Los Angeles Kings
Kings GM Dean Lombardi's quest to add more grit and character continues. He desperately needed to add a left-winger that could play among the top-six forwards, so Smyth is a nice fit. He's getting on in years and wear & tear, and he's expensive, but he should help the Kings.

What does it give the Colorado Avalanche
The Avalanche needed to dump Smyth's contract to get the rebuilding plan started, and they managed to do just that. Quincey is a nice addition to the blueline, but Preissing was a salary dump by L.A. The draft pick is just an add-on, but the key to this deal is getting out from under Smyth's contract.
