SCATCHARD FOR TANABE

The Phoenix Coyotes acquired center Dave Scatchard from the Boston Bruins for defenseman David Tanabe.

What does it give the Phoenix Coyotes
The Coyotes continue to shuffle their roster in an attempt to find the right combination. Scatchard will probably become the third-line center in Phoenix, and add even more grit. With Petr Nedved, Mike Comrie and Mike Ricci also in the fold, look for Boyd Devereaux to be moved to the wing. Scatchard does a lot of little things well, and should provide energy and two-way skills. Tanabe became expendable because of the emergence of Zbynek Michalek and Keith Ballard this season.

What does it give the Boston Bruins
A shakeup was inevitable in Boston, and Scatchard may only be the first of several other changes ahead. In Tanabe, the B's add a badly needed blueliner with NHL experience. His speed is perfect for the way the game is played today, though he has been largely an underachiever at the NHL level throughout his career. Still, Tanabe will see tons of ice time in Beantown. The loss of Scatchard should mean more ice time for Brad Boyes, though it may also mean a return to his natural center position for Patrice Bergeron.
