SAMSONOV ON TO EDMONTON

The Edmonton Oilers acquired left wing Sergei Samsonov from the Boston Bruins for center Marty Reasoner, forward Yan Stastny and a second-round draft pick in 2006.

What does it give the Edmonton Oilers
The Oilers are desperately trying to cement their spot in the Western Conference playoff race, so adding a quality scorer like Samsonov is a major coup. Reasoner was expendable due to the recent acquisition of Rem Murray, while Stastny was not among the team's top prospects. Samsonov is a potential unrestricted free agent, however, so this move may have merely been a playoff rental for GM Kevin Lowe--not unlike the acquisition of goaltender Dwayne Roloson.

What does it give the Boston Bruins
The Bruins will likely use Reasoner in more of a scoring role, after spending much of his time with the Oilers on a checking line. Stastny returns to the Bruins, after being selected 259th overall in 2002. He too may see ice time right away, since the team has lost Samsonov's scoring from the second line.
