GUDBRANSON GOES TO OTTAWA

The Ottawa Senators acquired defenseman Erik Gudbranson from the Anaheim Ducks for a fifth-round draft pick in 2021.

What does it give the Ottawa Senators
The Senators are looking for veteran leadership along the backline, so Gudbranson should help. He is only signed through 2020-21, so the bruising blueliner seems like a stopgap measure. Ottawa's top defense prospects may be ready for the NHL in 2021-22, so this trade makes a lot of sense for the Sens. Gudbranson also helps the team get to the salary floor.

What does it give the Anaheim Ducks
Big Gudbranson played reasonably well for the Ducks, but the team decided to move on and save money with this transaction. Anaheim now has a little bit of money to spend on UFA's if they so desire. Otherwise, they may pocket the savings in preparation for a 2020-21 regular season that may not include fans. The fifth rounder originally belonged to Edmonton.

Fantasy impact
There is no fantasy impact here, as Gudbranson is mostly a defensive defender. He hits, blocks shots and collects penalty minutes, but that is about it.
