In Malenstyn, the Sabres add a physical winger who can play in their bottom-six and kill penalties. 2023-24 was his first full NHL season, and he managed 6 goals and 15 assists in 81 games. The 26-year-old does not have much upside, but he is a useful pick-up for Buffalo.

Malenstyn had been in the Capitals' organization since they drafted him in 2016. However, the team is reshaping their roster and moved draft picks in several recent trades. Trading Malenstyn, who is a replaceable player, got them back a second-rounder on draft day.
