BOURGAULT OTTAWA BOUND

The Ottawa Senators acquired forwards Xavier Bourgault and Jake Chiasson from the Edmonton Oilers for forward Roby Jarventie and a fourth-round draft pick in 2025.

What does it give the Ottawa Senators
This is an intriguing trade from a Sens perspective. After being drafted in the first-round in 2021, Bourgault has struggled to put up the same point totals in the AHL that he did in the "Q". This caused him to quietly slip down the Oilers depth chart. Now in Ottawa, the right-shooting forward who can play center or right wing will get a fresh start as he continues to develop. If he can rediscover his scoring touch, he may have a clearer path to playing in the NHL than on a strong Oilers team. Chiasson spent last season in the ECHL. His career trajectory appears to be that of minor-league forward.

What does it give the Edmonton Oilers
Jarventie is the only player in this trade who has appeared in the NHL, suiting up for seven games with the Senators in 2023-24. He may be in tough to play that many NHL games for the Oilers in 2024-25, given the depth they have up front. But, at 6'2", 184 pounds, he has the makings of a new-age power forward. Jarventie has scored 86 points in 136 AHL games, so the question is whether he can translate that into a middle-six winger role in the NHL. The second-round draft pick in 2020 is a good asset that the Oilers can potentially use in a trade if they need to do so.

Fantasy impact
While Chiasson is unlikely to make much of a fantasy impact, Bourgault and Jarventie still flash some potential. Bourgault does seem to be the most likely to get a chance next season. However, both players need to establish a role for themselves in the NHL before any final verdict is made.
