PRONGER TO ANAHEIM

The Anaheim Ducks acquired defenseman Chris Pronger from the Edmonton Oilers for right-winger Joffrey Lupul, defenseman Ladislav Smid, a first-round draft pick in 2007, a conditional first-round draft pick and second-round draft pick in 2008.

What does it give the Anaheim Ducks
Pronger joins Ducks captain Scott Niedermayer to form an awesome 1-2 blueline punch. Together, they'll combine to log 55-60 minutes a night as bookend franchise defensemen. While solid, Anaheim's blueline lacked a little depth heading into the off-season. Smid was supposed to help a little this year. Instead, Pronger will help a lot in all game situations. This deal makes Anaheim an even more formidable Stanley Cup contender.

What does it give the Edmonton Oilers
Since Oilers GM Kevin Lowe had no choice but to trade Pronger, he wasn't going to receive enough of a return to maintain their playoff status. So, he did the next best thing in landing two young players and three high draft picks for the future. Lupul, a local product, should become an instant hit with Oilers fans. He'll probably settle in as the team's No. 2 right wing--behind Ales Hemsky--and provide a badly needed second scoring option. Smid may be ready to step into the lineup immediately, and projects as a top-four defenseman. The three top picks will eventually make Oilers fans forget Pronger, though it won't be easy.
