OIL DEALS BERGERON TO ISLES

The New York Islanders acquired defenseman Marc-Andre Bergeron and a third-round draft pick in 2008 from the Edmonton Oilers for defenseman Denis Grebeshkov.

What does it give the New York Islanders
In Bergeron, the Isles acquire a potential quarterback for their power play. And they shake up the club a tad while they're at it. Is Bergeron ready for the job? He wasn't in Edmonton, but under Ted Nolan, who knows? One thing's for sure, the smallish blueliner with the big shot will need to shore up his defensive play in order to enjoy a long NHL career. He joins a young core group of young defensemen -- such as Bruno Gervais and Chris Campoli -- still trying to find their niche.

What does it give the Edmonton Oilers
Although bigger than Bergeron, the 23-year-old Grebeshkov is no banger by any means. He offers a similar toolbox of skills as the 26-year-old Bergeron, but is currently playing in Russia and will finish the season there. He's also set to become a restricted free agent this summer. The Oilers aren't receiving immediate dividend in this deal, but they are shedding some salary (Bergeron made just under $1 million), and their hope that they can shape Grebeshkov into a well-rounded NHL defender is legit.
