FLAMES, OILERS TRADE DEFENSEMEN

The Calgary Flames acquired defenseman Steve Staios from the Edmonton Oilers for defenseman Aaron Johnson and a conditional third-round draft pick.

What does it give the Calgary Flames
Hell has officially frozen over, as the bitter Alberta rivals team up for a trade right at the deadline. The Flames get more presence along their blue-line, which had been missing since dealing away Dion Phaneuf to Toronto. He is under contract through next season, so Staios has time to make his presence felt in the Flames locker room.

What does it give the Edmonton Oilers
The motivation to move Staios to their bitter rivals was his contract for 2010-11. Oilers GM Steve Tambellini did well to move it and add a pretty good future asset in a third-round pick at the same time. If the Oil weren't in last place, this trade would have never been consummated. Desperate times call for desperate measures.
