RANGERS ADD McCABE
The New York Rangers acquired defenseman Bryan McCabe from the Florida Panthers for forward Tim Kennedy and a third-round draft pick in 2011.
What does it give the New York Rangers
The Rangers needed to address their power play, and this move does just that. McCabe is an upgrade as the power-play quarterback over young Michael Del Zotto, who has regressed a bit this year in his sophomore campaign. The price wasn't very steep, either, in order to land McCabe. He also adds experience and leadership to a relatively young brigade.
What does it give the Florida Panthers
Kennedy could be recalled and suit up right away for the Panthers, since they're both injury-ravaged and expected to send a few more players packing before Monday's trade deadline. But the key to this deal should be the third rounder, as Florida continues down the path of a massive rebuilding project. Without McCabe, newcomer Alexander Sulzer and youthful rearguards Dmitry Kulikov and Keaton Ellerby should start seeing more ice time for the Cats.
