SHARKS ACQUIRE RIVET

The San Jose Sharks acquired defenseman Craig Rivet and a fifth-round draft pick in 2008 from the Montreal Canadiens for defenseman Josh Gorges and a first-round draft pick in 2007.

What does it give the San Jose Sharks
Rivet brings a veteran presence that the team was looking for. The 32-year-old will provide some leadership and a rugged two-way game, and he's capable of playing in the team's top four. He joins Kyle McLaren and Scott Hannan as veterans on a young Sharks corps.

What does it give the Montreal Canadiens
The Habs received excellent value for a player who would have most likely walked as an unrestricted free agent this summer. Rivet, who has been a member of the Canadiens throughout his career, had a run-in with coach Guy Carbonneau earlier this season when he was scratched for a game. Besides the first-rounder for this year's draft, the team also acquired a good young rearguard in Gorges. The 22-year-old may never be in the top four, but he will provide capable, overall defense as a depth blueliner.
